Timid Spider

Artificial Ecology

Six kinetic sculptures/robots/organisms have been created to collectively define an ecological system. Each organism uses a sensor to sense a particular property of the environment (light intensity, chemical substances, sound volume, or spatial proximities), and according to the information extracted from the surrounding space it expresses behavioural aspects using movements and media.

A communication system has been implemented into this ecology to allow each robot send its sensor data to other members, which affects and calibrates their actions and behaviours. Thus, the performative nature of the ecology demonstrates the collective emergence that is defined by the perception and calibrated behaviours of its sculptures/robots/organisms.

透过六组动力雕塑/机器人/有机个体作品,集体界定一个生态系统。 每一个体透过一种传感器接收环境中的特定信息,如光强度、音量、空间距离等,并依据周围捕捉到的各类信息产生动作,发光或发声等响应。

此生态系的运作包含一套通讯系统,使机器人之间可以互相传递传感器数据,影响并校准彼此的行为与动作。 本项目藉由此生态系中各个动力雕塑/机器人/有机个体的信息沟通与表演形式,展现集体性的涌现特质。

Description:

A timid spider which means this little creature is afraid of everything. He wants to be unique rather than stay among common. Therefore, he has the aid of a mechanical spider to protect himself and wears a suit shelter for protecting his soul.

As creators, we put a real spider on the top of our robot. We also put wires tie on his legs so it looks like controlling the robot. We have redesigned the appearance of it. For the shape, hiding amount of wires and make it looks like a whole. Building to a Steam Punk shelter which looks like an old-fashioned metal outside depends on the mechanical structure, it looks powerful and it is just fit our concept.

We use the MQ-2 sensor to collect air information( burnable gas) as an input to the robot and the feedback is its different movements such as turning around and crouching. In nature, insects also use smell to distinguish others. The air molecules which receive from the MQ-2 sensor simulate the smell molecules which animals and insects left. On the other hand, animals and insects in the nature also change their movements according to different smell.
